CONTACT: PETER BIERMEIER, PROJECT MANAGER – 608‐334‐6940
Granite Peak Ski Area will be holding a public meeting to present its draft expansion plans for winter and summer activities at Rib Mountain State Park. Meeting details are as follows:
Date: December 7, 2016
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Granite Peak Ski Area, Sundance Chalet
Granite Peak currently leases 405 acres of the 1,600 acre park and has created a plan to expand its lease area by 155 acres, for a total of 560 acres. The plan includes additional ski terrain for beginning and intermediate skiers, expanded skier services, and an expansion to hiking, snowshoe, and cross country ski trails.
Peter Biermeier, the Project Manager for the expansion plan, said the plan has been carefully crafted so that no existing hiking trails will be lost, western hiking trail access will be improved, and important features at the park, including both historical and environmental, will be fully protected. “This plan is the culmination of extensive work by recreation and environmental experts to assure Wausau area citizens that the important family and recreational elements now existing at Rib Mountain State Park will be preserved with enhanced access”. Biermeier relates that Granite Peak officials are pleased to have an opportunity to roll out their plan and explain in detail each aspect of the expansion.
Since 2000, the annual impact to central Wisconsin’s tourism economy from Granite Peak’s skiers has increased from $2 million to over $25 million in 2016. The expansion plans will nearly double jobs to 380 while boosting economic impact to $53 million.
The overall impact of the plan would be to make Granite Peak more viable for decades to come, expand its contribution to the Wausau area economy, while promoting the local culture of diversified outdoor recreation.
